Description

This easy cheesy meatball tater tot casserole recipe is a crowd-pleasing comfort food packed with juicy meatballs, crispy golden tater tots, and layers of creamy, melty cheese. Perfect for weeknights, freezer meals, or casual gatherings, it’s hearty, family-friendly, and full of rich, satisfying flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

1 (32 oz) bag frozen tater tots
1 (24 oz) bag frozen fully-cooked meatballs
1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • In a bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

  • Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and layer in the frozen meatballs.

  • Pour the sauce mixture over the meatballs and spread evenly.

  • Sprinkle 1½ cups of cheddar cheese over the sauce.

  • Arrange the tater tots in a single layer over the cheese.

  • Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes until tater tots are golden and the casserole is bubbling.

  • Remove from oven, top with remaining ½ cup of cheese, and let sit 5 minutes to melt.

  • Garnish with parsley and serve warm.

Notes

Do not thaw tater tots—they bake crispier from frozen.

Pre-cooked meatballs are essential for easy, safe baking.

Add vegetables like peas, corn, or green beans to the sauce for variety.

Use cream of chicken soup for a different flavor profile.

Let rest before serving to help the casserole set and slice easily.
