Description

These cinnamon sugar donuts are soft, baked, and coated in a sweet spiced sugar blend—ready in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

For the donuts:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1/4 tsp baking soda

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (room temperature)

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the cinnamon sugar coating:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease your donut pan with nonstick spray or butter to prevent sticking.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, and both sugars. Stir until everything is evenly combined with no clumps remaining.

In a separate bowl or large measuring cup, whisk the buttermilk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Make sure the melted butter isn’t too hot, or it could scramble the egg. Once smooth, pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir just until combined. The batter should be thick but scoopable.

Transfer the batter into a piping bag or a zip-top bag and pipe it into the donut pan, filling each cavity about 3/4 full. Don’t overfill, as the donuts will rise during baking.

Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the tops spring back lightly when touched and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then carefully transfer them to a wire rack to cool slightly.

While the donuts are still warm, brush each one lightly with melted butter and roll or sprinkle them in the cinnamon sugar mixture. Be generous—the coating is part of what makes these donuts so irresistible.

Serve immediately while warm, or let them cool completely and store for later.

Notes

These cinnamon sugar donuts are best enjoyed fresh, especially when still warm and tender from the oven. However, if you have leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To keep the cinnamon sugar coating from dissolving, avoid stacking the donuts directly on top of each other. Use parchment paper between layers if needed.

To reheat, place a donut in the microwave for about 10 seconds. This brings back some of the warmth and softness, although the coating may not be quite as crisp as it was when fresh.

If you’d like to freeze them, skip the cinnamon sugar coating and store the baked donuts in a freezer-safe container. When ready to eat, thaw at room temperature and coat in melted butter and cinnamon sugar before serving.
